I noticed yesterday that someone I knew had really bad breath and its got me a bit worried about it. Is it only garlic and onions that cause it or is there other stuff as well? how much garlic or onion does it take to cause it and is there a way to make it nicer?

It is from bacteria in the mouth or from acid reflux from the stomach.

Brushing the teeth and/or getting help from a doctor for the acid issues are the cures.

Bacteria forms on the tongue. If you're worried, sitck your tongue out in the mirror and see if it's yellow. If so, mouthwash is in order! Also, brush your tongue when you brush your teeth. :-)

it is bacteria in the mouth, mostly on the tounge

garlic and onion just give of an unpleasent scent
the odor stays on your tongue

It's bacteria that feed off food residue left in your mouth into smelly (usually sulfur-containing) compounds. I eat onions and garlic all the time with no breath trouble. That's because I brush my teeth regularly. Keeping a good dental hygiene routine should prevent this: brushing, flossing, getting a check-up and cleaning regularly. And clean your tongue – it's a veritable hotbed for bacteria.

Many things cause bad breath. Germs and Bacteria are just one reason. It also depends on the food. Garlic, Onions, Tomatoes, Milk, and Ketchup are just some. You can 't stop the food from making your breath smell bad, but you can destroy bad breath after eating. Try the Listerine Pocket Packs, or Chewing Gum, or Life Savers and Mint. Did You Know 95% of Bad Breath comes from your Mouth? ( I Think ). That is why it is important to brush your teeth twice a day. Or if you really want nice breath, brush after every meal. And at night, Try these 3 things in order to make a perfect breath; First Floss, then Brush, and last Listerine ( or another Mouth Wash ). That should leave your breath feeling and smelling great!

a person can have bad breath even after brushing their teeth and tongue. so suggesting someone brush their teeth wont solve the problem in some cases. i suggest going to a dentist find make sure it's not a serious health problem.
