My 4 month old baby is exclusively breastfed and has been having some rather foul burps for the past couple of days. I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary and her diapers seem fine… it's just her burps! They smell faintly like sulfur, or halitosis or something. What could be causing this? Should I take her to the pediatrician?
I know in adults( not too sure about babies) burping and tasting, smelling sulfur (rotten eggs) could be caused by what is called "giardiasis" an illness that affects the digestive tract, is caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia lamblia. The parasite attaches itself to the lining of the small intestines in humans, where it sabotages the body's absorption of fats and carbohydrates from digested foods. You can pick this up either from food or water, both my husband and I picked this up after eatin at a chinese restaurant. Other possible causes for her rotten burps; Lactose Intolerance (if this is the case then try eliminating dairy from your diet), Soured Tummy which is quite common it could have been from something you ate, just give her lots of water and it will go away on it's own. If your really worried about it then take her to see the doctor for piece of mind but try not to worry too much, sure it's nothing. Try talking to her doctor about giving her Pepto Bismol, that would definately help her. Does your daughter spit up alot? Have continuous tummy aches? I was thinkin possible Reflex though that's probably not the case, i'm really just trying to give you some ideas.
Hope i helped!

Have you eaten any garlic lately? (Eating Italian food like at Olive Garden, or even lasagna or spaghetti at home, which are all "ordinary", can have alot of garlic.)
The other thing is, foul-smelling breath is often the first sign of illness, like a cold or the flu, for a baby. If she starts running a fever or begins to seem cranky, then you'll know for sure. Hope she feels better soon!
